It is me again...i joined this site thinking that i can help. I am a collector. A compassionate one. I call collection agencies on behalf of friends and family, negotiate settlments and payment arrangments.... I fight for settlments on my job, and this lawyer here in the forum, makes an obsene comment.............that i felt was directed to me//he said something slick about being a saint and working for the devil.....that hurt because god's people are everywhere, in jails, prisons, even collection agency's, so i have decided to leave the forum///no need to be here when you all have a big shot lawyer who hates collectors........farewell

Beauty, I find it very valuable to talk with someone on the other side. Perhaps put a little human perspective on the job you do. For the most part, I don't care for collectors because most are rude. I have had positive dealings with some who have been amicable in dealings. But they are the minority. It helps us to realize that you are just out there doing a job to put food on the table, take care of the family or whatever the case may be. I must ask though, and you seem like such a sincere person, why are you in that line of work? It must be tearing you up inside at times doesnt't it? Can't you find a consumer advocate group to work for where you can have a more positive spin?

I'm sorry, but I just don't see the point of beating a dead horse, folks.

Beauty is a debt collector. It is one person's chosen line of work, or perhaps just the best job available at the time this one person was searching for a job.

As a country, our economy stinks. In some states, it is much worse than others. Berating someone about their job is pointless.

I commend Beauty for holding down a job in a legal profession. If she is happy and it is making her money legally, who are we to decide what is right for her. Keep it up Beauty! You are the right path!

I used to work in a major department store selling fine jewelry. People would ask how come you are always trying to sell something to everybody that is "just looking"? I would reply "cause its my JOB and it is how I get my paycheck!!"

As I stated before, EVERYDODY has certain areas of expertise and being a collector is Beauty's.

I don't think it has to do with desparation or looking at oneself in the mirror...

I manage a finance company. About 75% of my job is giving loans out to people: financing their cars, school, etc. But when I give a loan out, I can't let it just walk away and never come back; so the other 25% of my job is collecting.

Unfortunately, it is one of those necessary evils. I don't have a never-ending supply of cash, so if my customers aren't repaying their loans, then my funds start to run dry. If all my money is tied up in other people's hands, then I cannot give out new loans.

I can't say that I enjoy making phone calls, but if you loaned someone money and they weren't paying it back, wouldn't you call them to see why?

I must differentiate myself though; I'm a finance company, not a collection agency. I do find their tricks and methods to be abhorring. And while this will open me up for attacks, I thought I would put a different persective on it.

One of the reasons I am here, though, is because we are all in the same boat. I have my own creditors that I owe, and I got myself into problems in the past and am still dealing with them. But I try to use these experiences in dealing with my own customers, because I know what they're going through.

No offense taken. I would agree that the ones that work for these payday stores, and the ones who get off on threating to have you arrested, have something wrong in their head. Those, they must be desparate or have no soul.

We seem to be picking on Beauty for being a collector, just because of the line of work it is. And the point I guess I was getting to is, outside of collectors who are immoral and unethical, why should we dislike someone just because we owe them money. She works for a company who gave a loan to someone, and it is her job to find out when the customer intends to repay it. I, for one, would rather have more people like Beauty as collectors, because I'm sure she is a lot more pleasant to deal with than the rotten ones.

I came here to help, not get bagered by a bunch of people who have personal vendetta's with collectors and specific collection agenceis.......
I do it because it feeds me, better than any other job i have ever had///i make 4000.00 a month if not better. I have a nice car a few bad habits and a lot of bills...the only other thing that i can do to keep up my lifestyle is home invasion or armed robbery and since i chose to stay out of jail, i'll just call you. If you don't have the money. O.k...i talk to 100.00 people a day who have nothing/////the difference between myself and other collectors is, they want all or nothing, if i can get something that is what i will do///100 1-200.00 payments is is a lot better than 10 balance in fulls any day///so if you don't like me or what i have to offer to this forum, don't read the post..if there is a personal issue, you can deffinatley, hollar at me on the one on one. I can receive personal emails.......good day!
And yes this time i am screaming at the top of my lungs!!!

Beauty - it seems you are only reading a couple words of each post and then getting upset over them. I have read them all, and while most bash debt collectors because of their rudeness and their prefession of choice, the exact same posts praise you for your work ethic.

I don't see where anyone is making a personal attack on you.

But Beauty, life IS bull. You have to take the good with the bad.

See - I do computer phone support. And you know, the thought of most computer nerds is that they are self -rightous know-it-alls that can't be bothered with other people. People think that of me. But then they meet me or talk to me and realize I not only want to fix their issue but educate them so they feel more empowered in the future.

It your standard stereotype where the few ruin it for the reat of us. You have three choices: stay in the job and be pissed off, get out of the job and be pissed off, or stay in and change the impression.

May I recommend the third. It sounds like you could make many people happy by staying in your position and helping, as well as staying here and giving us your inside knowledge.

Beauty, you can offer a lot to the posters on this forum, but if you can't take a bit of abuse along with the productive discussion, maybe you should unplug your internet. As long as there has been internet-based discussion, there have been posters who make ad hominem attacks, off-topic jibes, etc. These are a fact of internet life. If you can't handle it, maybe you shouldn't participate in online discussion.

How do you deal with debtors who get upset with you? Do you just get upset back and react as you have here? If so, I'm guessing you aren't as "innocent" a collector as you claim to be.

If a debtor gets unruly i simply terminate the call, if they call back i ask if they are ready to speak like adults and if they say no i hang up until their attitude changes. What i said was not meant to start another blog about me and what i do. It was just to blow steam and let those that do have s to say, know what time it is with me. I am simply speaking my mind too.

Beauty, who is starting blogs about you here? The only discussion I see about collectors are how to deal with them, and how some use illegal tactics. I just don't understand how you are reading into this that it is a personal attack about you and people are starting blogs. I'm going to put this out there and you can get upset if you want............I think you are making all of this to be about you and it is NOT.

I have to say I agree with Steelers & pdl.never.again - like I said before - we're beating a dead horse here with the constant regurgitation of the "being a collector is a bad career choice" thing.

And likewise, Beauty, we've asked you to stay, but if you're uncomfortable, or feel threatened, you are free to ignore our forum.

Beauty, please don't be so sensitive. No one is criticizing collectors, per se...I truly feel that if someone did it would be just plain ignorant. I will say again...There is nothing wrong with being a collector. You can always strive to be the good guy. Please don't take anything to heart, it's only a message board.

I havn't dealt with a troublesome debtor ever. I've always had a nice talk with everyone and they have always been helpful. The reason people have tons of problems with debtors is beacuse they are constantly calling (a machine does it 90% of the time) and then they answer the phone and start screaming at them. I always answer and talk to them assuredly then i don't see a problem :)
