Hello - I live in NYC and wanted to get some advice. I had a run in with Asset Acceptance a couple of years ago and it really got ugly! They called my home and work with harassing calls. They left a nasty message on my home answering maching and also lied to my admin to get me on the phone at work. I sent them a letter and called for them NOT to contact by phone and filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. I recently found that they ran a search of my credit profile and got some past credit card amount (from the early 90's) that I didn't even know about. They sent me a letter about the debt and now are starting to call again. I HATE this agency and the rude/unprofessional people that work there. I have very good credit and will pay any debt that I do owe. I was not aware of this old credit card but do know I closed the acct myself. Do I have any leverage from my past complaint and letter for them not to contact me by phone? I really don't want to pay this debt since it's with them! Please advise. Thank you!

If the debt is from the early 90's as you state,it is probably too old to collect by court action or report to your credit report. If you are absolutely sure of the statute of limitations for this debt and know they have expired, you can send them the cease & desist letter linked here.If you are uncertain of the sol date, then go to the third link in my signature and send them a debt validation letter.Whichever letter you send make sure it is sent certified return receipt.Read up on the relevant laws on the first two links in my signature.
