I'm 24 and I don't want to have issues with my credit. I don't have credit card debt it's mostly unpaid bills and medical bills. Its less than 10k but I just don't know how to approach the situation. Is consolidating the right thing to do? and what exactly does that mean?

You can consolidate your medical bills as well as your other unpaid bills and pay them off. If you go for a debt consolidation program, the consultant will contact your creditors or collection agencies and propose a payment plan for you. The payment plan will be depend upon your affordability. The consultant will also negotiate with your creditors or collection agencies so that they reduce or forgive your late fees and charges. If your creditors or collection agencies accept this payment plan, then you will have to send your monthly payments (as per the payment plan) to the consolidation company who will divide it amongst your creditors. Thus, you will find that your multiple bills will be consolidated into one single monthly payment.

I suggest that you pull your credit report (you are entitled to a free report every year) and see if these debts are listed. If not, you have a good chance of working out some kind of payment with the original creditors (utility, hospital, etc.). If the bills have been sent to collection, they most likely will appear on your report. You can work out a payment arrangement with the collection agency too.

If you have no credit history and are behind in your bills, I doubt that anyone would give you a loan for consolidation.

It would be best to work out something with your creditors. You can get your credit reports at www.annualcreditreport.com
