I just got the matter of of the Prism/CBSD cleared up and closed the account and now Sectrum/SBSD and Citibank USA NA/ccsm have shown up on my credit monitoring that new accounts have been opened. I don't want to have to pay for a credit report every time one of these new accounts show up that I did not open. What can be done to stop this nonsense with citi bank?

ccsmc spectrum/cbsd definitely showing up as newly opened accounts, or could they be existing/old accounts that have been purchased by these creditors?

I'm sure you probably know the drill of going through the dispute process with the credit bureaus. Other than that, maybe contacting the credit bureaus directly to find out what you can do, and also looking on the FTC website for answers.

I also received a notification from my credit monitoring company that CITIBANK USA,NA/CCSM opened a new account.

Does anyone know why exactly this is happening and what steps to take to make sure this is not a fraudulent case. Why is ccsmc spectrum/cbsd on my credit report?

Did you read original post? Looks like Jerome is having the same problem as you. You may have to dispute the account with the credit bureaus. If this is not an account of yours, seems like there is some identity theft going on with this CCSMC SPECTRUM/CBSD.

I called citibank 800-374-9700 and asked them to get that account deleted and notify all of the credit bureaus to remove ccsmc spectrum/cbsd from my credit report.

The only thing i can think of is someone mentioned here the other day that ccsmc spectrum/cbsd is due to Citi bank had bought out someone else and were transfering all credit cards over to Citi. Could this be it?? Just seems weird that all these people are having new accts opened by Citibank!
Hope this may help,
Ang

Ang, I think you are probably right. There is another large thread about citibank and reporting to credit bureaus but not on ccsmc spectrum/cbsd. They must have recently started their reporting for the new accounts they bought.

Phillips Union 76 Gas Cards have been transferred to Citibank. I don't think there is anything to worry about. Anyone else have a gas card with them and getting alerts?

I received what I thought was an unsolicited credit card (MasterCard) from CitiBank about a week ago. I immediately opted to not accept the card. Contacting the 800 number on the back of the card today to see if I could solve the mystery of how an opening of a "new account" on my TransUnion service I found that I had received a "notice" from CitiBank (among the many other CitiBank solicitation mailings) that my Macy's account would be converted to a CitiBank account unless I responded back to the notice. In my case the new account was a conversion of a Macy's account. I was told that the fact that I had not activated the account would catch up at the credit bureau in a few days.

I was alerted by Equifax about a new account that was opened in my name, CCSMC - Spectrum/CBSB, and learned that Citicorp, the "owner" of the Macy's card switched the Macy's card to a Master Card. I was told that a letter had been sent to Macy's card holders alerting them to the change but the letter apparently looked like a credit card solicitation that many (like me) threw away. The was also a MAJOR problem with the letter. It said that unless you mail it back indicating you do not want this Citicorp Mastercard they will send it to you, rather than asking you to indicate that you wanted it. Thus, there will probably be thousands of people receiving new Mastercards they did not ask for and do not want. Hope this clarifies the matter, although it's a shame it's going to keep the folks at Equifax and Transunion unnecessarily busy answering questions about this matter.

So its a Macy's card?

I too had this pop up on my credit monitoring and was kind of scared about what it was. I am about to start apartment hunting and dont need any type of drama.

I once had a Macys card, so thats what I suspected. The thing is I called up Macy's and they said the account was closed. So what is Spectrum/CBSD?

Nevermind. I was calling Macy's. I just called the number posted above (which is actually CITI) 866-510-2761 and they also cancelled the card with no problems.

Whew... that had my heart thumping the first time I saw that. Glad its cleared up. Thanks everyone.

Its good to see alot of us immediately knew, searched, or were notified of an opened account almost immediately.

This shows that more people in our country and becoming aware of the identity theft problems. I found out 3 days after it was opened on 9/28 just by a random check I do to screen my credit report.

Please someone tell me that just by calling this # 866-510-2761 will clear this all up with no after headaches. I've worked to damn hard to get my credit looking good again to be screwed by a dept. store or bank. I thought it was identity thieves at first, but now to find out it????????s a firm or bank doing this is wrong and they need to be reported.

I just got iff the phone with Citibank Customer Service. Apparently Citibank is taking over Macy's credit card operations and anyone with an open Macy's account will be getting a new Citibank Card soon.

Citibank took over old cards, including Macy's. Call 1 866 510 2761 and they should be able to explain and cancel account if that is what you want.

How can Citi Bank open an account in my name with all my information without my permission? Wouldn't this be illegal? If it is, how can I prosecute? Isn't that why state and federal prosecutors exist, to protect the public?

Paul V you are a lifesaver! I just called the number you provided, 866-510-2761, and spoke with an operator. It turns that this is an upgrade on my Macy's account to a Citibank/Mastercard - which I'm not thrilled about, but at least I was able to talk to someone to get this straightened out! If you call Citibank from the numbers listed on the website or call Macy's, neither of them will have this information, it will appear that you don't have an account with either company. But if you call this number and basically keep pressing "0" until you reach an operator they can tell you what's going on with the account and send you a new card or even close the account if you wish. The operator I spoke with advised that no activitiy had been reported on my card and that it hadn't even been activated yet. I just had her send me a new one so I can handle it from there...just wanted to let you all know before you go through the trouble of a dispute!!! It took me about 10 minutes and got it wrapped up!

The mystery card finally showed up in my mailbox. The card now comes with a number (800) 432-0282 that is only used to close the account. It works exactly like the activate number where a machine on the other end asks you to enter the card number then tells you the account is now closed. It then hangs up. There was no opportunity to express how angry I was about this situation.

I had the same issue with the Macy's to Citibank think.

After talking to five different people and being on hold for a total of 25 minutes I got to a person who could cancel the account. The direct number to that department is 866-510-2761.

Once there is only took about 30 seconds. You will have to give your social security number, but that is par for the course.

Good luck everyone!

Just got a TransUnion report that shows these low-lifes opened an account in July of last year in my name. IT IS NOT a transferred account because I have only had one credit card for that past 22 years. CITI are scum! I'm filing with FTC over this.

First I want to thank everyone that posted this messages, it was a big help, since it happen to me too. After I called TranUnion to place a IDtheft, I found this site, and it fixed my problem. Since Citibank owns Macy's card, if you don't use the card over two years(that's in my case)they'll close your account and consolidate that card with a master card in this case Spectrum. So my suggestion is if you have a Macy's card and don't use it, cancel it before they'll do it for you and send you a master card or visa. Thanks a lot everyone

I'm having this problem NOW. According to my credit montoring; an account was opened up this month (6/2008); I was told that it was Macy's. I have never opened up an account with Macy's. It shows my balance is 0; also, I called Macy's and they do not have anything with that card number and/or my name. What's going on?? Help!

Wow; thanks everyone! My Citi card was tied in to Radio Shack which they sent me another one because I closed the account; go figure. Anyhow; I called the Citi phone number given here (Thank you!!! :D ), and closed the account. I thank you so much! I was hoping that I wouldn't have to deal with TransUnion as I've heard so many terrible stories.
Take care!

I got the same alert and called the number on my credit report. I was told that Citibank issued a new credit card to replace an old card that was inactive. The reason they gave me was that they did not want me to lose the available credit-which I translated to mean they want to encourage me to spend. They did say that a notice was mailed to me within the last two weeks to advise me of the new card-but that it was possible I had not yet received the card (which I have not).

In the last two days, I have had 'new' CCSMC Spectrum/CBSD and Citibank USA NA/ccsm accounts shown up on my credit report too.

Any thoughts? I do not have other accounts that Citi could have purchase, etc.

If you have one of the following (CITIBANK USA,NA/CCSM,
PRISM/CBSD or CCSMC SPECTRUM/CBSD) and have a Macy's card don't worry. I called our credit monitoring service. Macy's sold there account and depending on what credit service you use (Equifax,Experian, orTransuion) the new account will show up under different names. Look at your lates Macy's bill or call your credit monitoring service...it took me 5 minutes to get an answere.

I got the alert today as well. After reading these posts it made sense to me except I've never had a Macy account. I called the number and found out it was a Citi dividends MC that had been converted to this new card. Nice of them to let me know about it though- never recieved any info in the mail.

my recent credit report showed 3 new accounts opened in 6-2008 and we do not have anything outstanding with citibank.

I also have received information through my Identity Theft Protection insurance that Citibank USA, NA/CCSM, CCSMC Spectrum/CBSD and PRISM/CBSD just opened accounts in my name. I am getting these alerts about twice a week. I just put a fraud alert on for Equifax, Experian, Tranunion to call me before anything can be opened in my name.

CCSMC SPECTRUM/CBSD showed up on my TransUnion credit report. On Equifax, it was CITIBANK USA, NA/CCSMC-SPEC and on Experian it was just CITI. Each one had a different reporting address. Totally confusing.

Thanks for the contact info so I could take care of this. What happened in my instance is that my pre-existing HomeDepot account which was unused for a while was cancelled without notification and then they took it upon themselves to open me a new account with CitiBank so they could keep my business. So nice of them to take care of all this WITHOUT ASKING MY PERMISSION!!! So I called them (1-866-510-2761) and had the account closed. Unbelieveable!
