I just wanted to add that I really need some help on this letter from National Enterprise, it is a debt I owe through HSBC that was charged off but I am unsure how to go about getting this and my other chargebacks removed or fixed on my report. Also, if anybody knows about past due accounts, Will they report these late payments for 7 years now? I want to get this straighten out, I am recently married and have a baby on the way. I do have a college degree, but my pay isn't that great at the moment, I am looking for a second job to get some of these things taken care. I would appreciate it if anybody has any advice.
Thanks
some thoughts
My credit went radioactive around 2001. At the start of 2005 it was still low - like in the 400s. I had in the vicinity of 15-20 negative reports with each credit agency. However, I was in a position in 2005 to start cleaning it up so this exactly what I did:
1. Disputed every negative item with all 3 credit bureaus before I paid a dime to anyone. You can do that in writing or on-line. That got about 30% of negative items wiped off of credit reports.
2. After that, I was left with credit card charge-offs and collection agencies on my report. The charge-offs I didn't do anything about because, well, they were charged-off so they weren't hassling me for $$, and the entries were becoming so old that they really weren't impacting my credit score that much. I sent settlement letters to the collection agencies making a low ball settlement offer, with a specific payment plan and a condition that they remove the entry after the debt was paid in full. From there I negotiated depending on their response. I paid them, and they deleted their accounts off my credit report.
By early 2006, I had goosed my credit up 580. Still not great but much better then before. Once I got to that point, I applied for two or three unsecured credit cards that are marketed to sub-prime. Yeah, I got screwed with an "application fee" on some of them, and ridiculous interest rates, but I carried a small balance on them and paid them religiously to get my credit history going again.
I really recommend getting the 3 credit bureau monitoring through one of the credit bureaus. Transunion seems to give the most**** for your buck, becaue you can refresh your credit score and reports for all 3 as many times as you want for the monthly membership cost. Equifax is more expensive, but they present more data in a better format.
