Hi Soaplady, thanks in advance for your help. Anyway, I am going through my credit report for the first time and see a few items I need to dispute. There is an item labeled "Charged Off", should I dispute the debt with them or the collections agency who is listed later on the report for the same debt. As a matter of fact, there are two different collection agencies showing the same debt. Is that normal? Do I need to dispute with both?

If the OC has sold off the account to a collection agency, then the charged off status will be mentioned in the credit report. The original CA may have sold off the account to some other CA. As a result the names of the two CAs are listed in your credit report. You can pay off the debt and remove the charged off status mentioned in your credit report.

If the OC has a charged off status and a zero balance, they are reporting correctly...they are under no obligation to remove the tradeline. Depending on the creditor, they may not have sold off the debt but simply assigned it to a CA. Who do you owe?
