The notice was sent in my wife's maden name when we have been married for 12 years.
The fact they would settle a $244 debt for $175.
The fact they wanted our checking account number.
The fact my wife had her purse stolen a couple of years ago.
The fact that the only number they have for her is her cell phone which is under my name.
This all worried me enough before beginning my research of this company and ending up here reading of all the horror stories regarding them.
I have just typed a letter to return to them disputing the debt. Any other guidance any of you have would be appreciated.

Asset Acceptance mostly contacts for debts that occurred long time back. Check the SOL of these accounts if they are within the legal collection period. If the statute has expired, they cannot force you to make the payment. Many stories about Asset Acceptance are available in the threads below. Read them and understand their collection techniques that often sound illegal.
