Check out you states AG website to see if they are licensed to do business, chances are, if they are internet,they're not. They can, and will, threaten anything. Send them a request for debt validation,certified,return receipt. They can't put you in jail. From saying CRSI, I am guessing you mean Certified Recovery Systems. There is much talk about them on this forum. Sounds like what they said is a standard threat they make. My first question: do you know what the $8500 you owe is for? Have they told you who the creditor is they are collecting? Here's just one thread talking about them:

Have you received anything in writing from CRSI? They must validate your debt to confirm about their legitimate collections. Also, contact the original creditor and make direct payment arrangements with them
