However, you should make sure that this company is not operating under any other names or DBA's ("doing business as" names) before assuming they are not licensed in Michigan.

I would ask this company for it's license number to do business in Michigan. If they are operating legally, they will not be hesitant to give it to you.
On the other hand, if you ask for their license number and they refuse to give it or start making threats of arrest, jail time, etc...there's your answer as to whether they are operating legally in Michigan or not.

Illegal payday lenders are notorious for sending a fake paper check through your account when you block their ACH access, so putting a stop payment on them doesn't always work.
