I've just spent hours writing letters to all the pdls I've taken loans with over the last year. In every case, they were operating illegally and I paid well beyond the principal amount. My primary goal is to get them to mark my accounts PIF--is it worth my time to go after them for the overage? My guess is it would be a very cold day in a place far south of here before that ever happened. Has anyone had any luck in that regard?

First of all check carefully whether the payday loan companies you have borrowed from are legal to lend in your state. Please check the pdl laws of your state.

If they are illegal then please follow the steps as said in the post in the page mentioned: -
What should you do if your payday loan company is illegal?

If you have paid an illegal/unlicensed payday lender above and beyond the principal amount you borrowed, it might be a good idea to demand a refund and a paid in full letter/receipt. You may or may not get one or both. It still doesn't hurt to include that tidbit in your letter.
