My credit score is already horrible, but will debt consolidation cause it to be hurt even more in the short term? Because I feel that I can handle the debt myself, it would just be easier to go this route. Thanks.

Consolidation program will offer you lower interest rates than what you are paying at present to your creditors. Besides, if there any late payment fees and financial charges, negotiations will be done with the credit companies to wipe them off. Hence, you will get a reduced amount to pay in the plan.

Your credit report will show that payments towards your accounts are done through this program. This is better than not paying them at all. Since you can manage paying them on your own also, see for the benefits you will get in the program. The best thing that helps your credit before taking the program is if you can pay off the debts on your own. But, consider the benefits you will get using the professional help.

debt consolidation doesn't ruin your credit. It stays in your file as long as you are working in the plan. Once all the accounts are paid off, no one will know that used this program earlier. Read this one
