i did contact the original companies and they stated that they can no longer accept payment and that i need to pay the collection agency to get the item removed. the easiest thing for me to do would be to call the collection agency and see if they would accept a settlement of x amount of dollars and then if they accept just pay them by phone. But is that not safe to do??? what should i do step by step???

Your file might be in collections and you are required to contact them for making payments. Have you confirmed with the original creditor if the file is already sold. Creditors can still take payments only if your account isn't sold to any outside collection agency.

the items have been sold to collection agencies. i have the contact info for these agencies listed on my credit report. Should i call and make arrangments to pay or should i correspond by cert. mail only?
Do the correspondence in writing because you need to have proof
Do the correspondence in writing because you need to have proof of all your actions. You don't want to have a mix of words from the collector after they take away money from you.

sorry i have so many questions.... thanks for your info. i will send them cert. letter requesting that they validate the debt. Once i receive that validation, i wanted to try to talk down the amount of debt with them. Should i just write up a contract stating x amount of dollars is what i am willing to pay and ask that they sign and send back to me if they agree to that amount as a payment in full? Can i ask that they remove the item from my report once paid. or do i have to settle with a "paid in full" or "settled debt" reporting?
thats up to the collection company
they should have been sending you bills in the mail in regards to this debt. And always ask for a letter from them stating you have paid the debt to keep for your records
