united recovery systems has contacted me regarding an American Express bill I owe. I want to pay but they will not take checks. They only want a direct draw out of my checking account. I do not trust these people. I looked them up online and saw numerous complaints. Anyone have any suggestions. Thanks.

One suggestion is to get a pre-paid debit card and only put on there enough money for them to be paid. This way they don't have access to your account and they can't take money that isn't there. It's also much cheaper than sending via WU or MoneyGram.

Also, be careful of giving them a personal check...it's the same thing as them having direct (ACH) draw out of your account. Once they have that check they have your account info!

Another alternative is a money order. If they won't do any of the above, tell them sorry...it's the only way you'll pay.

I wish now that I could sue this company. I dealt with a guy there named Bill Patten, who was so conceited and made me feel like a scumbag.

I do owe Sears $12,500, but when you consider that half of that is insured, then URS would get $6,750 of that owed debt. This man wanted me to pay $400 a month, which I did for a few months and wish I could sue for, but he wouldn't reduce the $12,500 debt. Now mind you, $6,750 of that debt would be pure profit. At this rate, which I was only paying $50 in principal a month, it would have taken almost 250 months to pay (21 years), and at the end of that time I would have paid URS $87,500, so there sum total of profit would be $80,750!! Can you imagine a racket where you can make $80,750?!

Do you have an agreement in writing with them? Do they own the debt, or are they contracted by Sears? If Sears still owns the account, then you could try to work out an arrangement with them. If they won't work with you, then you need to work the arrangement with URS. Personally, if you can't afford it, then I would prioritize it lower, after necessary living expenses. It is a last resort, but I would also consider getting advise from a local BK attorney. I once was in a situation like this with a collector, and I told him I was looking at BK, and his response was to go ahead and do it. Fortunately, I was able to get the OC to recall the account from them, and I was able to settle a few months later. There is no way to force them to give you a better arrangement, but they do seem to be too unyielding for a collector. Is there any chance that you could offer a settlement? That would be about your only other option.
