This is crazy, in the last 3 weeks we have received 5 settlement offers from 5 different creditors 2 of which arrived in yesterday's mail. PROBLEM, we can't possibly pay them all at once. We had 6 if you count one we got back in December, (which in order to make Christmas for the kids we could not take). What do I do? We are in the middle of gathering statements to start a debt management program, and now this...We think we will have to follow through with making them payments, since we can't make all these settlements at one time.

Advise please, thanks Reny

Under debt management program you need to pay off the entire debt through a repayment plan. Now if you can afford to make the entire payment along with the monthly fees of the debt management company, you can go for it, else you should go for debt settlement. Under debt settlement, you need to pay only 40 to 50% of the outstanding debt amount. If you want to go for debt settlement with the credit card companies, you can start with the lowest outstanding payment and slowly proceed towards the large payments.

at this point i would not advise you to use the consolidation program because you will more likely have to pay the origional full balance.

I would start to settle with the best offers first, and keep in contact with the others and see if you can make some sort or arrangement like explain to them you promised to pay this company this week it will take you a month to save up for the next, and that you can pay them on x day of april or something to that nature or set up a payment plan. talk to them see what they are willing to do.

It so far it is:

2- think cash
pay day one
National Credit Adjusters
CCB collection agency
HBSC (From December)

We are really past due about a year or so. I think what helped is we thought we were going to file chapter 13 and I did retain an attrny, so I told them all that was what we were going to and giave them the attry's name and phone #, however we never paid any more to the attrny, after we thought about it 5 years was not worth it to us. So we went back to debt management, thinking "ok we know we will have to pay every 100% back--BTW our BK was going to be 100% payback too--Anyway, we now have all our odds and ends taken care of and can afford the debt management payment. We figured if we were in a debt management program and if one of them sued us, we might have a leg to stand on in court by showing we were making an honest effort. Now we don't know what to. We really don't want to get sued, that could get messy at work if our wages get garnished (we won't get into trouble, but it will not be fun either )..

IF I thought I could pull off the one month at a time settlements, without being sued I'd jump on that train....On the other hand if I go with debt management, I feel like I'm done with the stress. Payments will be getting made, no more phone calls and there will be an end.

There are about 5 -7 other accounts that would still need taken care of besides the ones listed above.
