I know alot of people have gotten their stimulus checks, however I have not yet and have heard 4 diffent stories from the IRS devils, and I am fuming.... I was talking with the clerk at the gas station I go to everyday and she hasn't gotten hers either. It is maddening...

I'm getting mine mailed. I took that 'advance' on my refund. Those who did that, AUTOMATICALLY get theirs mailed.

ladybug do you owe back taxes? The reason I ask is, I did and I received a letter last week stating I would get a check this week, however on the back of the letter it did say the amount was "pre" any back taxes owed, so I called the IRS to make sure, and they had already applied mine to the balance I owe, which was ok by the sooner I get it paid the better...

I'm still waiting for the letter that says I'm getting mine somewhere around the 20th.

My friend at work did get his, finally, but the letter only came a day or so before the check. My brother got his, but got the letter 3 weeks after he got the payment.

A question for you (maybe you can give me an answer, since the IRS doesn't seem to be able to!)

I received my tax refund by direct deposit back in February, no problems at all. At the time, my daughter and her fiancee were living with me for part of the year. TurboTax instructed me to enter all people who lived with me during the year, and then it eliminates those you can't claim. I was certain I couldn't claim my daughter & her fiancee, because they didn't live with me long enough to qualify, but I went ahead and entered them anyway, just to see what the program would do. It came back and said I couldn't claim them. So I thought, "ok, no problem!". Went on and filed my tax return, it was accepted, and got my refund in 14 days..as normal.

However...

When my daughter's fiancee did his own taxes a few weeks later, TurboTax rejected his return, saying the IRS would not accept it because someone else had claimed him as a dependent! I immediately pulled out my hard copies of my return - and there was his name under the dependents section! So I've filed an amended return, but to this date, the IRS still hasn't recorded it as being received - I know they're busy and running behind what with the stimulus payments creating extra work for them and all.

Now, here's my question - will that situation stop me from getting my stimulus payment? I mean, the IRS accepted my return, and issued my refund with no problems whatsoever - but if they now realize that somehow my daughter's fiancee's name ended up on my return as a dependent (and shouldn't have been), but they haven't gotten to my amended return yet (which removes him from it as a dependent), would that hold up my stimulus payment?

To my understanding, I think it shouldn't hold it up, because the requirement for receiving the stimulus payment was that you FILE a 2007 tax return - regardless of any issues with it - and I did that.

Any thoughts on when will i receive my stimulus check? I did receive the letter back in March that said I was getting a stimulus payment, but I haven't gotten the second letter yet that says I'm definitely getting one and when it's coming, and there's no info on the IRS website...yet. I guess my payment is not schedule to be mailed until 6/20/08, so I was hoping that if it's coming, I'd see the second letter soon.

I finally got mine. I got the letter on economic stimulus check info, saying I would get my check on the 6th of June,it was the 6th that I got the letter! I got my check 2 days later.

My friend hasn't gotten hers yet; she was asking "When will tax relief checks be mailed?" her check was supposed to be mailed on the 23rd of May. But she didn't direct deposit, get rapid refund or anything. She did mail hers on April 15th, and I heard that if you filed yours at the last minute, it may take longer, but not sure..karen

SueBee...

You are correct in saying that there should be no hold up in your stimulus check. However, and here's the caveat...b/c you filed an amended return, you won't get your check direct deposited. It defaults to a mailed check! Believe me, I amended this year and ended up getting a paper check instead of direct deposit of my stimulus payment. Although the IRS says that they have not processed your return, it is probably in the works, and once they start to process it, usually any refunds, etc. assigned to the account are on hold until everything is reviewed and completed.

You can go to irs.gov to check the IRS tax refund status. If it returns not found, then it is still in the works. If the mailing date for your ss # has passed, I would call the IRS.

I don't know how old your daughters' fiance is, but if he's over 18 and he's filed his own return in previous years, and then this year you claimed him on your return, it probably flagged the IRS that something didn't seem right. On your return, does it say that there are 3 exemptions - you, your daughter & him? Did you file as single or HOH? When you amended how many exemptions and filing status did you claim?

I ask this, b/c there might be tax consequences here.

Anyway, if your Stimulus Check date is 6/20/08, you should be seeing your (paper) check soon.

Hope this helps!

Karen

***UPDATE*** after spending 47 minutes on HOLD WITH THE IRS I am told to allow up to 30 more days for someone to call me back  and that there is NO INDICATOR on her computer screen if my check will be directly deposited or a paper check   (different story, different person) I guess it will be like x-mas when and if I ever do get it

to answer your questions:

Yup, I already knew it was coming by check instead of direct deposit, because I used TurboTax and had the fees taken out of my refund. So that part I already knew about.

There are 3 exemptions on my original return - my 2 boys and my daughter's fiancee, which WASN'T supposed to happen. I knew I wouldn't be able to claim either he or my daughter, but put their names into the system just to see what it would say - and as I expected, it spit them back out and said I couldn't claim my daughter of her fiancee, so I ASSUMED (big mistake) that TurboTax would delete them off of my return. It didn't - it took my daughter's name off and left her fiancee's name on! I didn't notice it when I printed my return out, so that's how it got filed that way. I'm not sure why the program did that - I guess I was "testing" it in a way, to see if it would allow their names on my return, or if it would say I couldn't claim them. I knew I couldn't, but wanted to see what it would say if I put them in. (There was no intent to defraud the government here, trust me - just trying to see whether TurboTax's program would do what it was SUPPOSED to do and take them off!) It was my own fault for not reviewing the return closer when I filed it. I just assumed TurboTax had taken their names off, since it told me I couldn't claim them.

I filed head of household, since I am a single parent.

When I amended the return, I still filed head of household (since I do have my 2 boys to claim), but I changed my dependents to only 2 - not 3.

Quote:
SueBee - if, when you filed your amended return, you owed the IRS and did not pay it, they will take the stimulus payment and apply it to any monies you owe.

I didn't owe them anything, I got a refund, as I do every year.

Thanks for your help, desperatelyseekingsanity! I'm hoping that this next week will bring both the letter and the check.

In the meantime, I'm Ebay-ing my fingers to the bone to make extra money.

Karen - you are right...if she filed on the 15th of April, she probably won't get hers until late summer. The IRS says 2 weeks AFTER they process the return, but as we all know, they are swamped!

From what I see on the IRS website, they're NOW saying that if you filed at the last minute, you should allow up to SIX WEEKS after the date your return was filed to receive your stimulus payment.

Hope that might help someone...

I know - I'm hoping that MAYBE, just MAYBE, if my check is mailed out on the 20th (or a couple days before? crossing my fingers!) that it just MIGHT arrive in time for my trip next weekend to take my youngest to his dad for the summer. It's not a long trip, but paying $150 for gas in addition to other bills and rent is really not in my budget right now.

That's why I'm Ebay-ing!!

I've called the IRS and they say my Rebate is still " no information at this time." However..I'm REALLY not expecting it until the beginning of July. I'm just going by the payment schedule the IRS has. I'm getting my mailed.

If it's any help, my parents just got their 'letter' in the mail on Saturday that says they are getting a stimulus payment, how much, and when to expect it. They are scheduled for June 20 mailing, just like me - but I haven't gotten my letter yet. I'm hoping it will show up soon! However, I've seen this little letter thing show up in people's mailboxes at varying times - a week before they get their check, the day they get it, and up to 3 weeks after. There seems to be no rhyme nor reason to it.

I used taxactonline.com and did have my fees deducted and then the money was deposited in my account from them direct deposit. My last two #s are 83. I have not received my letter yet because you do not get that until closer to the date is what I have been told. I did get the original notice a while backing stating I would be getting $1200.

When you have fees deducted from your refund like that, here's what happens...

1: You complete your return, and give them your routing/account numbers.

2: They file your return with the IRS, using their routing/account numbers.

3: IRS deposits your refund in their bank account.

4: They deduct their fees, and deposit the remainder into your account.

The IRS never sees your routing/account numbers. That's why you're getting a paper check.

As to the letter, don't sweat it overly much. I never did get a letter. But my money showed up in my bank account exactly on schedule. Stimulating.....

Well, things are definitely looking up. My parents (last 2 of SSN 58) received their letter on Saturday, and their check came in the mail today. It was scheduled to be mailed out on 6/20/08, so maybe the IRS is actually starting a little earlier.

I'm in the same bracket (last two are 53), so I'm hoping to see mine before this weekend. I guess I can only hope...

Desperatelyseekingsanity, guess you and I are in the same house...the poor one until the check comes, if it ever does and if it is the amount it is supposed to be. Some people have received their check already and/or wrong and they have received the 2nd check correcting the amount that was suppose to be originally given while we wait.

Like I said extra $$$ I wasn't expecting so I should feel good when I get it, but only WHEN I get it not a second beforehand. You never know they may run out of money by then.
My girlfriend and her husband still haven't received their check, hers ended in 14, I think. She didn't have any of the things you mentioned unc, so I don't know what has happened. It was to be mailed on the 23rd of May, and still no check!..karen
I think that if I were in her shoes, I'd call the IRS and ask what's up. Just a thought. Has she tried the 'Where's my stimulus' tool at IRS.gov?

I wouldn't rely on that "where's my stimulus payment" thing on the IRS website. It's been notoriously unreliable for most people. Many people who are receiving paper checks rather than direct deposit are finding that the "where's my stimulus payment" link continues to show "sorry, no info available" right up until the day the check is mailed - or worse yet, it simply keeps showing no info available - even after the check has been received!

lmale, so yours will be here when? My last two are 83. I have received nothing, no letter (except that first one way back when they sent to everyone what they should receive), and the website shows nothing.

Just curious...seems like it is hit or miss with these checks...my daughter got less than the $600 and she is on her own working and is 23.

The amount you get also depends on what your tax liability was. If you did not pay at least $600 in taxes last year, then you will only get what you paid. So if the total due to the IRS (including what was taken out of your check) was less then $600, you will get less then $600.

Example:

Say I made $18,000 in 2007. Doing my taxes I only owed the IRS $389.

I had $2,500 withheld from my paychecks. I got a refund of $2,111.

But since my tax liability was only $389, I would only get $389 for my stimulus rebate.

If you look at your tax returns, your tax liability is shown:

On Form 1040, the amount shown on Line 57 plus the amount on Line 52;

On Form 1040A, the amount shown on Line 35 plus the amount on Line 32; or

On Form 1040EZ, the amount on Line 10.

I went to the website and called the number that ladybug advised of and nothing. Suebeehoney70 what is the last two of the social if you don't mind me asking. Guess I am just a waiting person. The only thing that the phone number said is that I would receive my check by July 4th via mail if I am supposed to be getting a check.
