Has anyone delt and had experience with Consumer credit counseling Services? How do they work?

CCCS is a non profit organization with branches all over the US. I know our's here in Minnesota is part of Lutheran Social Serices and is funded in part by the United Way. You meet with or talk with a counselor, they send out proposals to your creditors and the creditors accept, deny or adjust your proposal. The creditors also participate in funding thru voluntary contributions.

When I was in collections, this is the ONLY organization our agency would accept debt management plans from. Our companies policy was that if you reallly wanted to get out debt, at least go with an organization that was non profit based....the fees were lower which means your debts were paid off faster.

You can google for your nearest office.

I have been with CCCS for about 5 years now, I believe they have merged with Money Management International. They have been a really good company to deal with, at least for me. For my initial visit, I had to bring in all my credit cards and info on any debt that I wanted in the program, they write down everything you pay out including what your expenses are, then they figure out your income. Once everything is done, they give you a figure that you will have to pay once a month which includes their fee. At the time the fee was based on how much debt you had. After that they send letters to all all the creditors advising that you are now enrolled in their program and what you will be paying monthly. I have 1 account left with them and it will hopefully be paid off soon. They took a lot of pressure off of my in terms of the phone calls from the creditors & collection agencies...my only complaint would be that my rep changed several times in the last few years and when I try to call the current rep I always get a voicemail, but its just as easy to deal with customer service so I don't worry about it.
