I rec'd a message on my home phone from a lady at Vandenberg Chase & Associates saying she needs to talk to me re: a pending lawsuit against me. I googled their number and found out this place is a scam. They threaten people with "lawsuits" and tell them they need to pay otherwise a warrant for their arrest will be issued. Apparently this company purchases oold debts from other CA's and they try to threaten people into paying them.

I know for a FACT that all of my collections have been paid, so there is no way I could owe them. I called the lady back and left a message telling her she doesn't scare me and if this is a legitimate debt, then they need to contact me in writing. So, today, this lady left another v/m for me asking if i could call her back to give her my address. I'm like WTF?! Yeah right! I told her never to call me again and that I reported the company to the FTC, which I did yesterday.

Has anyone dealt with these scum bags before? Does anyone have an address for them so that I can send them a c and d letter?

Thanks!!

They do have a website: vcacorp.com. There is a contact us link at the bottom, but when I click on it, I get an error page.

I found this on a job listing that they have at Georgia Tech University: "We are located in King Plow Arts Center on West Marietta Street, less than a mile from Georgia Tech campus." The listing also says they are in Atlanta, Georgia. Perhaps if anyone has access to an Atlanta phone book, they might be listed?

This is one unprofessional outfit. I contacted the FTC and spoke with an agent earlier this week. The woman I spoke with told me that they have received numerous complaints about Vandenberg. Why am I not surprised?

Last week a woman from Vandenberg Chase & Associates called here and before she ever identified herself or her company, she demanded to know my name and social security number claiming that she had a warrant for my arrest in connection with check fraud. I had to laugh. The woman had absolutely no idea she had reached an attorney who knows the law and knows that she was in violation of the fdcpa by her use of threatening and abusive language. When I called her out and told her that I knew she was a debt collector, she stated she was with the legal dept. of Vanderberg and immediately began mumbling. The script she was working from didn't provide her with an option for my situation i.e. "what to say when you realize that you are talking to an attorney." I hung up.

Within less than 60 seconds one of her co-workers called here again (guess they figured I don't have Caller ID) and asked to verify my employment. Again I laughed and hung up. I guess these tactics work on the unfortunate general public who know nothing about their rights under the law.

I decided to fax a cease and desist to them. When I dialed their fax number, I got a recording saying the line had been disconnected. So I contacted them, was put on and off hold for nearly 10 minutes until the famous "Chris" got on the line. Mr. "Chris" attempted in vain to avoid answering my question when I requested that he verify his fax number. When I identified myself as an attorney, he finally got serious, turned on his fax line and my fax was able to go thru.

As soon as they received my fax, they called back immediately to tell me that they were turning my "case" over to their legal department. At that point I was ROTF LMAO because the first brain dead woman who contacted me clearly stated she was with the "legal department" when I pressed her for identification.

These jokers have a real scam going here and don't let yourself be a victim of it. Vandenber has their fax line forwarded to another line with an answering machine that answers: "the number you have reached is not in service, please check to see that you are dialing the correct number, blah, blah, blah." All Vandenberg did was call an out of service number, recorded the "out of service" message and THEN set it up on an answering machine. Gotta hand it to them--quite clever!! What a bunch of slimey p*r*i*c*k*s these people are!

Folks, all you have to do when these sleaze balls call is fax a cease and desist letter to them at: 404-249-9599. Keep your fax machine's transmission verification for evidence. They can call you back one more time to tell you (1) they are ceasing collection efforts, (2) they can take legal action against you or (3) they are taking legal action against you. That's it--no more phone calls are allowed. If they do continue to contact you, record them for evidence and contact the FTC and file a formal complaint.

Don't lose any sleep over their threats either. This small time outfit doesn't have the funds to take people to court for small amounts. It would cost them more in legal fees than they could ever hope to recover.

I received a called from this company today and it scared the sh--out of me. I told them they got the wrong number and then they called my sister who is on vacation in Mexico somewhere. She called me and asked what was going on that I was involved in some fraud and that she was too.
I quickly called the number back and the person answering the phone didn't know what I was talking about. I asked for the lawyer who called me-she stated that they were not a law firm but proceded to help me. Later, some guy gets on the phone and begin firing questions at me alone with threats. Finally, I ask if I could have the name of his company then I went on to say that your company violated my rights as a citizen, ethical rights and I'd like to speak with his supervisor. This guy name "Rodney Tab" fumbles and went right back into his spill-I knew right then and there something was odd about this so called Law Firm. I stuck to my script "may I speak with your supervisor because my rights were violated-my personal information was discussed with one of my references. He had no where to go but more fumbling. At last after being on hold till the Paralegal get's on the phone "Mark Robertson"-he starts in with the same style of hard nose verifing information and threats of law suits and legal worries. I remained firm with my need to have information on their company-which he would not provide. Mark ask why, do I have an attorney, what and I going to do with the information, am I going to "blow up his fax machine with all kinds of non-scense. I ask again, what's the address where you are-nothing. He ask, are you going to pay this debt are do we have to sue. I said, do what you think is best. Dial tone.

document the phone call and the actions. If they were a real attorney preparing to sue they would be much much more circumspect. From their website it looks like they are a CA, which means they have to follow the fdcpa. by law they must send you something in writing within 5 days of first contact, when you get it, DV letter time. if you don't get it and they call again document it. their website touts their membership in the ACA, so file and ethics complaint with the ACA, heck go to NACA.org and find an attorney in your area and see about filing suit.

If Vandenberg Chase and Associates call again, verify that you are indeed the person they are calling for, verify your mailing address and tell them you expect their dunning letter w/in 5 days. Then end the call. Do not engage them in any conversation beyond that and do not answer if they call again. When they send the dunning letter, send the a DV letter in response. Do you know what alleged debt they are collecting on? What state do you live in?

I have been receiving calls 2 to 3 times a week on my home phone and cell phone regarding a debt from 2005. I looked them up on the internet and realized that they were a CA. Last week they really scared me telling me that they were seeking a warrant for my arrest for "theft by check." They told me that I needed to pay $650 for a $200 debt in 2005. When I asked why it was so much more they stated that it was because they had to investigate my whereabouts for the warrant. I was so scared so I called an attorney I know who use to be a DA here in Houston, Texas. He gave me some information about my rights and told me to contact the Attorney General's office. Today they called again and the lady told me she was in the arbitration department and she wanted to make payment arrangements with me. She said her job was to research my place of residence, employment and my banking information. She wanted to settle for $450.00 instead of the $650.00. She told me that if I don't make some arrangements today they would proceed with garnishment of my wages. She told that when this happened I would not be able to pay my bills or my mortgage. She also stated that they would add $2600.00 to my bill for attorney's fees. I should not have engaged in conversation with her and gotten upset but I did. I told her I don't have the money. She acted as if she was speaking to a lawyer but I could hear them talking. She told the lady that I could not make arrangments and was there anything else that could be done before they garnish my wages. She asked if I had a credit card and I told her that I have not had a credit card in probably 15 years. She again acted as if she was talking to the lawyer and said that I stated I didn't have a credit card but that I do have one. We didn't get anywhere so she put a supervisor on the phone. She basically told me that this was a "theft by check" and not a loan. She wanted to help me clear this up before legal action was taken. She wanted me to give her my debit account numbers. I refused and we ended the call. After talking to the attorney general's office I filed a complaint with them and the FTC. The FTC said that if they get too many complaints they will investigate and take action so if this company has threated you report them. I also called the Consumer Credit Commission at 800-538-1579. They helped to ease my mind and they told me to send a "cease and desist" letter to them. Another place they told me to call is the American Collector Association at 800-957-3328. They have a website too. These people are really scary!

I was contacted by a "Stephanie" from 404-682-9404. I called back, asking for her with the case number they left on my voice mail. The woman I spoke to put an aggressive, threatening male on the phone. He said if I didn't pay them $500 for a 2005 $230 debt to Ace Cash Express, they would haul me into court and have the sheriff issue a summons. He said that writing a bad check is fraud, and I could go to jail. When I told him I am unemployed, he told me that the call was being recorded, and it could be used against me. He complained that I told him twice that I was unemployed. Duh, he didn't seem to get it the first time! I told him that he was the one yelling. He denied this. He urged me to extort money from family and friends to pay him immediately. After much harrassment and many threats, he finally said if I sent them $100 or $200 within 4 days, he would forestall the lawsuit. I will contact the FTC, BBB, CCA, and the AMC. This company needs to be shut down asap!

Welcome to the community Mirra.
Debts are civil matters not criminal, you cannot be charged with a crime unless they pursue it as a criminal matter and even so would have to prove intent to defraud, and waiting over 3 years to file the criminal complaint would look pretty bad on their behalf. Not only is his allegation inaccurate it is also a violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, one on the count of accusing you of committing fraud, and an additional count of threatening you with imprisonment, which is also a civil penalty.

It's funny you would use the term extort as if you wanted to pursue this criminally you could try to press charges of extortion as that is what it is.

This place is amazing. I have faxed them 2 cease and desist letters and now have emailed them from their website with copies of my 2 previous faxes attached to it. They have not sent me anything in writing about what the debt is, etc. I don't have a clue what it is. They just keep leaving messages at my work with the admin assistant here that it is about a pending fraud lawsuit. Then this morning they called my sister's house and said that I had used her husband's name as a reference (which I never would have) and they didn't seem to know that she was even my sister. they also told her it was a fraud case. I have told them they do not have permission to discuss this with anyone but me and I even told them if they provide me with the documentation and it is a valid debt that I would be happy to work with them to get it repaid but I was not aware of anything outstanding. Of course, I am documenting all of this...have the fax confirmation reports that show they went through, etc. anything else I can do? Should I call the FTC at this point and complain. Intimidation and threats seem to be what these folks are all about....is it just a scam or could this be a valid debt.....what should I do????? I am not really scared, but I understand that something like this can get out of hand quickly and create a really big problem so I'd like to get it figured out soon! thanks for any suggestions!

The caller was threating with arrest ecetera. And this dept if it is legit is now almost 5 years old. Thank-you for all you input.

at work no less and would not stop threatening me. I have filed a complaint with the FTC. The woman gave me a website that does not exist and told me I could go there to verify my debt then said she was going to verify the procedure. Then a very abusive male go on the phone and called me 'one of those people who get money and then just think I don't have to pay it back. I have plenty of accounts in perfect standing but I don't know what this is. It sounded vaguely familiar and he said it was from 2005. I was going through a divorce then and my now ex didn't pay his child support so I know there were months when I did paycheck advances. They were all set up to automatically repay so I told him I was pretty sure this debt was paid. He told me that pretty sure meant I didn't pay because people like me don't pay their debts, people who pay their debts know when they have paid someone. I said that this was from 2005 (as he said) and I didn't have records here at work. He kept saying I needed to resolve it. I said that I would be happy to resolve it if in fact he could prove I owed it and I could verify the company. He said that they were a million dollar company and he didn't have to prove anything to me. I said well I will look at my records, he said in the mean time he would be suing me and contacting the Attorney General about me. I said that he didn't need to threaten me and that it would do no good because I don't give out info over the phone like that. He said that was just fine since I didn't want to pay he would just take me to court. I said that I never said that only that I wanted verification and I would not do it until he gave it to me. He said he was going to call these three people that were references and tell them about me. The phone call ended with him telling me that he would be contacting my HR and payroll departments at work to tell them about me and that he would be suing me. I said fine go ahead, A$$#*^%, have a nice day. It was terrible and it all happened at work!

Got a call on Aug 14th at 8:16 a.m. from Georgia 4046829404.Left a message asking for my sister (who does not live with me) informing me of a "legal matter for fraud against me. I have not idea because I've been at this residence with this number for a year and would not have anyone calling here for me any old matters. I got a call like this months ago asking again for my sister, not my name, asking to call referencing a particular case number. I am ready to report because this doesn't make any sense.

If you have been contacted by vandenberg chase and associates with threatening language, harrasment by calling continuesly, leaving threatening messages by voice mail. They have already violated your rights. You must contact the FTC, and report them immediately, these company does not have the work ethic in trying to resolve the debt, Harrassment is their Theme, and they must be stop and out of business. A liget collection agency follow their companies rule and regulation, not by intimedation to collect a debt and musnt discuss any information pertaining to the debt to anyone else other than to the person who is in question. Before you give out your bank account information which is a no no you must investigate and protect yourself from getting scam..If they have waited 5 years to collect debt, they can surely wait another day or so...until you can do some investigation yourself to make sure you are not being scam... its better late than sorry.....

I reached a "Mrs. Jefferson" who quickly gave me to the Legal Matters department. Both women were loud, abusive, and ignorant. They got very angry when I asked for a bill for what they said was a $600 loan that I got 15 months. They were definitely in downtown Atlanta and after "axxing" me several questions I would not answer, they said they would send me a bill and hung up on me.

They tried to bully me into believing that they were getting an arrest warrant for me. After calling the D.A. for my county I was assured that there was no such warrant. Next time they called I told Mr. King that the D.A.'s office acutally told me to file a FTC complaint against them. He didn't like that very much. When I asked for validation of my debt, he actually refused to tell me. He said that they would not mail me anything. Of course I cited USC 1692 section 809 which states that they debt collector must send you a validation letter within 5 days. He hung up on me. They're just thugs and if you stand up to them they cower.

A David Ricks called me at work and threatened to have a police officer come to my job and serve me with a warrant for an unpaid debt, I hung up when he called back (1 of 3 times) he got our receptionist and asked her for a fax # so he could verify employment. If he just called me at my desk isn't this verification enough??? Anyway this place is a scam, if they are harassing you I suggest faxing them a cease and desist letter at 404-249-9599. Thanks

I told my friend not to call them. Because I google their 404 number and I viewed all the messages here on this site. Thanks everyone, much appreciated! Oh? here's an additonal telephone number they left for my friend to call back to: 877-822-2677 ext. 3018. FYI

After I gave him my bank info and other info I really wanted to kick my own ass. So I've been researching on them and they are scammers. Now what should I do? Can someone please help me!!!!!

These guys are definitely slime. I have been getting calls constantly as well. After repeatedly ignoring their calls, and getting messages about filing a lawsuit, I get a call from an Amber Winfield. She stated that she would like for me to call her back. If I fail to do so, she will turn my file over to the "lega" department and that my employer would be called. I immediately called her extension and left her a message stating that they would receive a "Cease and Desist" letter from me this morning and that if they contact my employer that they WOULD be hearing from my lawyer. I faxed the letter this morning. The fax number is 404-249-9599. These guys are all about intimidating and scaring you into paying. Don't fall for it. I filed a complaint with the FTC this morning. If I were all of you, I would do the same.

I also received a call from these fine folks today. The little chippy that called asked for "Ummm Miss Johnson" which is not my name. I said "I'm sorry, who are you calling for?", then she got the LAST name correctly. HER name is Miss Johnson. I asked who they represented, she said noone, they represent themselves. I asked her to tell me what issue or account she was calling about, and she started telling me that she could see exactly WHY I am in the situation I am in and that I needed to BE QUIET and let her speak. I then asked for her supervisor, to shich she replied I am the supervisor. I asked for a manager and she said, apparently to someone in the background, Oh I'm getting nowhere, we're gonna have to subpoena her. She then hung up on me.
I WAS LIVID, so I immediately did a google search and came to this blog. I called the phone # listed in a post above, thank you for providing this, and asked for a supervisor. When I was connected to Ms. Robinson, I explained the call that I had just received. Turns out, they weren't even calling for me, they were calling for my mother. I told her that I would contact the State Attorney General if one more such call came through on my telephone, and that I would deliver a message to my mother. For what it's worth, she was extremely solicitous and admitted that the conduct was completely unacceptable. So, now I sit and wait for yet another call from these miscreants! Thanks to all for posting here, it helped me a lot to know that this is their usual tactic. I will keep you posted as to further activity, as there will no doubt be some.

This guy named "Adam Cain" called and threatened to sue me and to contact my employer. When I told him I didn't believe that he would sue me and pressed for why he would notify my employer, he got increasingly angry and loud.

He refused to send me mailed information about my account stating he would only send me a fax. He then said that I could confirm my debt on their website, but the account wasn't listed. Now it's posted but he still refuses to send me any written information, just wants me to give him my credit card or checking information.

Yeah, that'll happen.

Thanks for the advice I will send HIM a fax tonight.

OK...
About 2 weeks ago, I just so happened to go to my parents house to visit. My mom had told me I had a message waiting and said it was not a good one...I listened to it and it was from a Douglas Smith..I dont remember who she said she was with but she represented Ace Cash but was located in Georgia. She left her number...(678)369-4703 and told me to get in touch with her asap because it was about a pending check fraud case agaist me when I got a loan from Ace about 2 years ago for $100 and was unable to pay it back. So the next day, I called her up and she said there was a pending case for check fraud against me and that she had 48 hours to talk to me and make a judgement on what should happen. She said I now owed them $252.00 and said she would have to have my credit card number or a prepaid debit card number as a way of payment. Well, since I dont have a credit card, I gave her my prepaid debit card number...and said that I would put the full amount on the card on the 27th of December. She said ok that was fine and told me to give her a call the day before just to verify that the funds were going to be on the card. She told me that she didnt want to have to press charges, so thats what the courtesy call was about. Well, I have been getting kinda suspisious and whatnot, so I decided to google about whether or not they can really press charges and I have found a bunch of stuff on them from other people who have posted about Ace. And then today, I tried reverse looking up the number and I found that the number was unlisted but it was a landline....Shouldnt places such as who was calling me be listed? Her name was Douglas Smith. What should I do? Believe her and pay the funds so I dont get arrested or ignore her because she might be a scam?

IGNORE HER!!!!!!! DO NOT PAY THEM!!!!!!!!!!

When she calls back ask for her address so you can send a debt validation letter to them. I BET they will not give it to you. As a matter of fact, when you ask for their address, she will get pissed off and most likely hang up on you OR she will say that if you do not pay, you will be put in jail, have the cops come to your house or other threats.

DO NOT FALL FOR IT!!!!!!!. If she does not give you their mailing address so you can validate the debt hang up on her and do not ever talk to them again. If she threatens to put you in jail or to call the cops on you call your local police department and file a complaint against them. Give the police the phone number and have them call for you to confirm the threats.

OK from what I have looked up both on whitepages.com to get a general area of where the phone number is from. I then went on google earth and it is a residential house that this number is associated with.

I have been doing some investigation lately and I see these debt collection firms doing work from home jobs. People sign up and work from home, they then call people who owe debts and if they collect, a portion of the debt goes to the collectors and the rest goes to the person who collected the debt. That MIGHT be the reason you are getting these calls.

EITHER way do what I said above. do not pay them one red cent until they validate it.

The calls are coming from the area of Hutchens RD SE Atlanta Georgia 30354 from what I see.

Yeah it is pretty pathetic what they do. But we can't be too sure that is the case. You would have to call her today and ask for the company she works for and their mailing address.

First of all I want to say I love my job. Let somebody that knows tell you a fantastic story about this debt collector.

My client just got a settlement letter from her attorney indicating that they wanted to settle the case. A few months back my client got a phone call from one of the collectors from this debt collector. The agent did in fact do much of what several of you have complained about. The agent said a warrant would be issues for her arrest if she didn't make good on a check she had written to Ace Check Cashing. The agent was very abusive and made several other threats to my client.

I could go on and on here but I won't. My job is helping people file lawsuits against debt collectors. I am a referral agent for an attorney who gets the job done. The particular debt collector is one of the worst of the bottom-feeders I've seen for a while. I wish they would call me on something I would love to have the money.

Debt collection is a business and one blogger was right. If its run correctly there is no reason a debt collection business should not be allowed to operate. My problem is I have a problem with a company paying a few cents on the dollar and them trying to collect the full amount. A mark-up on a product or service is okay. However, to expect and on top of it in some cases threaten, harrass, or lie to a consumer to try and collect the cash is just wrong.

Well I started this by saying let me tell you a fantastic story. So, here it is. Vandenberg screwed up and is paying the attorney for my client $5,000 for a check to Ace for only about $300. During the past few months Vandenberg sold or assigned the bad debt to another bottom-feeder out of New York. Guess what??? Here is the cool part... This new debt collector called my client and said they were collecting on a judgement for a check from Ace. Guess what? No judgement was ever entered. A lie. A debt collector must be honest in dealing with you. In addition I contacted the debt collector and during the conversation I asked (6) times if they were a debt collector. Finally they admitted they were. That was funny also because the so-called person I was speaking to was suppose to be a manager in charge of the floor. So he violated the law by not identifying himself. In addition he threated to take my client to court if she didnt' pay the debt. I told him point blank she was not going to pay the debt. Then is when he said they would take her to court. I reminded him that threating to take somebody to court and then not doing it was another violation of the fdcpa. Just to add some icing on the cake I'm going to wait (5) days and then contact the attorney. I'm pretty sure they will not do the (5) days after the initial contact with the debtor thing.

Well thanks to all. That's two lawsuits in the bag over just one $300. check to Ace Check Cashing.

By the way I'm looking to put together a class action lawsuit against Vandenberg, Chase, and Associates. Please contact me personally with your story.

P.S. Please stop talking about putting these kind of places out of business. I get paid from companies like this. Have a heart...

I dealt with them this evening and they called my brother to find out my new phone number and told him that if I did not contact them immediately then I would be arrested.

Called them and got a very rude woman on the phone and I knew immediately that this was a collection agency. She broke the fdcpa by reaveling personal info to my brother.

She told me I would be arrested if I did not clear up this debt and I called the Local Sherriffs department and that they told me this was just a scare tactic and they are not able to do this...

I am contacting and attorney tomorrow as well as the county courts office.
