I have read and written on many ethics topics. Originally I wanted to wait for a while before commenting on this issue... maybe until after my book is published. However I feel I must comment and invite comment on a topic that often arises in the context of debt, debt settlement, and collections....

:evil: My husband and I seperated 2 1/2 years ago and the divorce is still not final. I used my credit cards for groceries to feed my children and I maxed them out and now have no money and no way to pay off my credit cards! Can you please help me?

We were about to close on a home purchase when the bank called to say they found a $5000 judgement from midland credit management against us? We didn't know it was there and aren't sure what it's for. We don't have the funds to pay it off. We will loose the house we were purchasing unless we can figure something out quick. Help!!!

Hello; Thank you very much for all of the wonderful advice here. I have learned so much regarding how to deal with debt. I'm just curious what the best course of action is regarding a debt. I've also been getting the letters from Capital One (I couldn't figure out what it was and letters to them for confirmation didn't get anywhere). Now I als am being contacted by Oracle as well but I'm doing research before talking to them. I don't care if my credit rating is damaged since I have no credit cards and don't buy on credit.

My husband received a summons to court for something he didn't know he owed. The lawyer only talked to him once, telling him he can pay a settlement, but neither of us have been able to get a hold of the lawyer since. The amount he's asking for is a lot more than we can afford to pay... is there any way we can negotiate with the collection agency themselves to get this settled? I don't know how to talk to them, so I'm afraid of messing something up and ending up in a worse position. I'd really appreciate any advice I could get.

Hello, everyone. I have just joined today and have found a lot of great information here. I have a question about a collection agency (Renue Security Services - National Notification Section) also known as Check Plus Revenue Security & Certa Med. I am very emberassed to say that I do owe Home Shopping Netowrk for an unpaid balance in which Home Shopping Network was taking payments from my credit card. Home Shopping Network transferred the debt to that collection agency.

Is there a time limit on collecting old debts..Debt collector contacted me about a debt from 11 years ago...I live in Kentucky..

I have been laid off twice with the past 5 years. Both times was for 6 months or more. I dug myself out of debt the first time but the second time hit harder for some reason. I owe about 12,000+ and I cant seem to pull my debt down signicantly. I was single but have been married for 2 years now. My wife is unemployed and I am trying to find a full time job but all I seem to be finding is contract jobs. I can borrow money from family but they wont give me the full amount of the debt owed so I need negotiate a lower amount or have someone do it for me.
