The horror story. I'm sure my story won't compare with most, but I need some advice so here's some background to work with. I retired from the military 7 years ago and paid off my property a little over 5 years ago. My father owned 3 homes of which the largest was/is willed to me. My father proposed to me that my family and I move into the home and our part of the deal was to maintain/improve the home, pay the insurances and property taxes and normal household expenses. You know, power water sewer and so forth.

what will take care of my student loans

I was told that if you default on a credit card, the collection agency has 4 years from the last payment to collect the debt. If they fail to do so in that time, the debt will "fall off" of your credit report. Is there any truth to this whatsoever?

Had excellent credit until two years ago when I loss my very lucerative consulting job without severance due to downsizing. Six months later, was forced to sell house and relocate to obtain employment. Accepted a position with lower salary just to get back into the work force. Bills are so far behind, I cannot recover. Will debt consolidation help someone like me? How does debt consolidation affect my credit? Is it the same as filing bankruptcy?
