I have tried numerous times to pay off a debt. Each time the creditor gone back on a promise of settlement and has been unable to provide proof of debt. What can I do to take care of this situation?
I have terrible credit. I made a lot of mistakes in my past. My credit score is like a 547 according to my experian report. Most of my accounts are old charge offs. I've seen several websites that say they can help, but I'm scared. What the heck can I do? I'm moving away in October of this year, and I can't even get an apartment!

I received a certified letter yesterday. It's a court document from a law firm/collection agency. It's an "order for alternative service". I don't know what that is yet, but I guess they are suing me in local small claims court over a credit card that was charged-off 3 years ago. Anyway...this law firm has NEVER sent me any letter informing me that they were collection on this debt. I know they need to send me a letter informing me that they are collecting on a debt and that I have 30 days to dispute the debt. I also know that I would then request that they validate the debt too.
....if a debt consolidation company is good and reputable? Is there somewhere to check on them?
Also, is there any place in the forums that gives sort of an outline of good questions to ask when speaking with a counselor of a debt consolidation place?
I'm really considering it....
Thanks!!!
