I have about $4000 debt. 4 different cards combined. Some say charged off and purchased by another lender. If it is a debt collection company can they then sue you? Or does a lawsuit have to come from original debtor? Also, 2 of them, both around 1000 are using law offices for collection. But not threatening suit. I'm trying to save my home and cannot pay this debt. What should i do? Will this go away on its own since its a fairly small amount?

Is it legal for premier recovery group of Buffalo NY to pass off a collection to International Asset Group of Amherst NY once they (PRG) have received a do not contact letter ? If the companies are owned by the same person or the owners know each other isn't this just a way to try to skate around the law.

The long story short of my situation is that I had a handful of Federal loans (half subsidized, half unsubsidized) that were consolidated to total about $12,000, and a private loan for about $15,000 through Sallie Mae. Well, they've been put into default and are now in the hands of Allied Interstate (the one from MN not FL). There's one potential blessing in that I've received a letter that says I can settle the private loan for around $11,000 paid in full by the end of the month. This is a pretty good deal considering it's less than I borrowed.
