In 1985, my mother died and my share of the proceeds from the sale of her house came to around $16,000. My ex-wife filed a lien on this inheritance for back child support and also attached a lein, unbeknownst to me, to my home, which I had purchased a year earlier. The back chhild support amounted to around $13,500, a debt which I freely acknowledged and was happy to pay in full. All was well and good, and my ex-wife happened to die five years late of cancer.
In 1996 I purchased and moved to another home nearby, and kept the old house as a rental.
