I thought I was going to have to wait until Friday to open my new account/close my checking, but in talking with a customer service rep on the phone today, he had me call the theft area of Wells Fargo/Wachovia and they were able to RIGHT OVER THE PHONE after verifying me, close my account, provide me a new acct #, assure me they'd in no way be attached, all future attempts would be blocked, order me new checks for free-- AND-- i don't even have to wait two weeks for a new debit card! They let me keep the same debit card since THAT number was never compromised.
