we have about 80K of debt on 10 cards, are current, but struggling to get ahead. we have budgeted ourselves to the max to stay current but are desperate to get out of debt. we have absolutely nothing extra to put towards the balances. where do we begin?!?!

First of all, thanks to everyone who shares their experience and tips on getting through this dreadful experience. I had perfect credit for my entire life up until last year when a dishonest business partner managed to talk me into funding our business on my signature. Now I'm paying for it. My challenge so far is not being able to get any of the collections reps past the "are you sure you can't even make a $227 payment this week to avoid going another month overdue?" question.

OK one of those what if questions. What if you settle with half your cards but the other say NO! What do you do? Would you have to file BK? I would be so upset if in the end I had to file bk, be like throwing money away to settle with the first card when everything could had been discharge at bk :(

Hi! I am helping my husband settle/manage debt so that we can get our lives moving forward. We sent a verification letter to Rickenbacker Collection Services, who had put a collection record on his credit report for a towing company in Goleta, CA (we used to live in Santa Barbara, CA). Neither of us had ever heard about this debt - no attempt was made to collect on it - and we were never contacted. Just received a letter today with attached paperwork from a lien sale of a 1970 Mercedes-Benz 250 (it says SD, but there's no such thing) back in February 2006 for a car he'd sold in 2004.

I went with Preferred Financial last summer and have settled 3 out of the 9 accounts that I have. They were able to take on my one big loan with CHase that wouldn't work with me and made them work with me. I hated talking to Chase so much because they never would listen to what I was telling them. I was a great client of CHase always paid what I owed but they changed my interest for no reason and put a cap on my limit, it made it look like I was maxed! I contacted Preferred Financial and they are getting me out of this mess, slowly but surley.

I have been getting calls from a collection agency named Appeles( sp?). I have no idea what this is for as most everything I have is current. I suppose there is a chance it could be something very old. I have read on the Internet these people are pretty nasty. Can I send a cease and desist to ask them not to call anymore if I do not know the specific debt they are calling about?
