What states do debt settlement companies need licenses to operate?

I have been here a few years and one thing I have noticed is that there are many people who do not understand that these are a public forum. Many of them think that the forums are for ABC company that sent them a letter or 123 company that took too much money out of their account. I know that we want to keep the forum open to everyone registered or not. But I know there is a way that when someone is not registered and makes a posting that you can inform them that this is not a company site and that they are not to post personal information on the site.

I tried to search through but didn't notice any threads that addressed this issue. When does the creditor send a 1099 to the IRS? After your last settlement payment and the account is completely considered settled and closed or after settlement agreement (which doesn't make much sense)? The reason I ask is because I am already stretched thin trying to gather funds to settle multiple cards. Doing quick estimate, if I manage to settle all my debts this year, then I will get another hit next year during tax season with a whole bunch of 1099s at the same time.

New player to the game. They have called my to my cell. When I asked them how they got my number they said they did a skip trace on my and found it there. They call and do not leave messages. When you answer they hang up. I called them back and they told my it was for T-Mobile, which is legit. I asked them to send me the information seeing how this was the first contact by them. 3 weeks went by and I got nothing. They then called again and I asked them where the information was. They said they sent it to my old address from 3 years ago.

Well, my account is going to charge off in a few days. Bofa won't budge from their last offer of 30%. Any suggestions? Should I just take it? What happens after this charge off date, will I lose the 30% offer? Don't know what to do.....wishing for 20-25% but they won't accept.....

Has anyone had luck paying pdl's with money orders, if so which did you use? From the post office? If I use those is ther a way to teack them so i can know that they were used?

My bankruptcy (CH 7) was discharged almost a year ago. We (my wife and I) recently found out that our mortgage was never reaffirmed and it's showing up on our credit reports as discharged. The attorney blames the mortgage company and the mortgage company blames the attorney. Our attorney told us that we can reopen the case but it's no guarantee that it will be resolved.

i JUST RECEIVED ANOTHER CALL FROM A COLLECTOR FOR SJM, ABOUT AN OLD PAYDAY LOAN. THE WOMAN WOULD NOT TELL ME WHERE SHE WAS CALLING FROM AND WHEN I ASKED WHAT I CAN DO ABOUT PAYING IT BACK SHE SAID PULL OUT YOUR CHECK BOOK. WHEN I SAID NO I WANT SOME DOCUMENTATION SHE JUST GOT IRATE AND SAID I WAS BEING MIRANDIZED AND I SHOULD RETAIN A LAWYER BY 2:00PM TODAY. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
