Can I afford to retire at 50 yrs?

16 years 5 months ago
I'm 35 years of age, married and making around $65,000 a year. I'm planning for retirement fifteen year hence. I know that I need to pay off my debt which is around $16, 000 before retiring and I am working towards it. After expenses and bills I can save around $250 a month. Help me calculate if I can afford to retire as planned. Also suggest me the best way to build the retirement funds.

Consolidating from Sallie Mae to Direct Loan Services

16 years 5 months ago
I have a consolidation loan with Sallie Mae, and it is two separate loans (I believe), listed as one consolidated FFELP subsidized loan and one consolidated FFELP unsubsidized loan. Do I have to be with Direct Loan Services in order to get the in the new 10-year loan forgiveness program for those in public service jobs? The loans are government backed with Sallie Mae. Also, does anyone know of any reason NOT to consolidate the two loans into one loan with Direct Loan Services? Thanks for any help/advice! Michelle

Amex Settlement Help!!!

16 years 5 months ago
Im 90 days past due with American Express, I owe them 21,000.00 I just received a letter from them saying that the have transferred my account to a local law firm (Wagner & Hunt). I talked to them twice already and told them that I was trying to gather some money to pay. They told me to come up with at least the minimum payment before my account is 120 days past due or the might start a litigation process. What are my chances of settling with them for 35 or 40% at this point? Should I call the law firm or Amex directly to settle?

Hi everyone, I'm really liking cruising your threads! There are so many useful things I've learned already, thanks! I'm not sure if this is the appropriate place to post this issue, please let me know if it needs to move. <3 Here's the history-- 3 years ago I needed major dental work. No cash. I applied and was approved for credit through Unicorn Financial. I was charged about $6000 for the work I got done. I wasn't told how huge the monthy payments would be. Me, being young and naive (I know better now!) didn't ask either.

help with a collection agency

16 years 5 months ago
I had a payday loan about 14 months ago, it was the second time I had borrowed from this company. I was short with cash to pay them back. I believe my original loan was for $500 and I owe $300. I did pay the full first loan back with 300% plus. I closed my bank accout after I found out it was illegal for them to charge somuch interest. I paid enough the first time to cover the rest of the second loan. Now I am getting phone calls from a Investigator Turner saying I will be arrested for fraud and theft.

Discover Charge Off

16 years 5 months ago
Discover is claiming that my account will charge off at the end of December; however, this would put my account 210 days past due. I thought all accounts charge off after 180 days. Also, they have been unwilling to budge for the past 3 months off of their offer of 60% settlement on the current inflated balance. Should I continue to wait to see if they'll reduce their settlement %? Or should I take the offer now (I can afford it) given that the settlement amount keeps increasing every month, and will increase on November 30th? Has anyone had similar experiences with Discover?
