I am seriously considering using a debt consolidation program, however I really do not know where to begin or how to go about doing so. I have 3 credit cards and one loan, all of which I am severely behind on and all are in debt collection stage, at least some of them having been sold off to a junk debt buyer. The bank with which I had one credit card and the loan through, took me to court one month ago in the state and county that I used to reside in, however I moved across country months ago and was never served papers.

We have accounts with: BOA Chase Citibank Amex Capital One How many of these companies offer settlements quickly? At what rates? Do any offer payment plans? If so, does the balance factor into that decision? Thanks!!

If anyone knows the contact info and or addresses to these companies could you please let me know. I just closed and froze my checking account so I know they will be racing after me starting tomorrow. I would like to be able to send some letters to these companies to make arrangements and stop wage assignments etc. All help is greatly appreciated! First off, I apologize for such a long post and I thank those who will take the time to read this and offer up any advice. Overall I'm in a pretty bad situation, I am very behind on 4 accounts overall, 3 credit cards and one loan that I obtained through a bank. Several have gone to debt collectors or been bought out by a debt buying agency.

Mint.com is in beta but i can attest to its user friendliness and power. It monitors all of your credit cards, bank accounts, loans, debts...it also gives you a powerful budgeting tool i would highly recommend this site. BTW its in beta so if there are some glitches be patient...this is a great idea and it's executed very well.

my $7,000 balance is now with a collection agency. they offered a settlement but are demanding payment in three days. i offered to pay $1,000 or more a month. they want the full amount at once. would it make sense for them to take me to court and try to garnish my wages when all they can take is 25% which is less than i am offering to pay anyway? if i take the settlement can i negotiate to pay it off in three months?

I have 8 - in the past I have paid them off - but never without them for too long - I have been selling household stuff to get out of debt - I just changed jobs and will not get paid the date all my loans think I will. There is no way I want my new employer to even know about this but I need to change the pay date. They are killing me and I am drowning and advice would be great! Great web site! My husband has been trying to consolidate his Sallie Mae loans since AUGUST! we are using Direct Loan & had 2 different loan companies we wanted them to consolidate, one was ACS, the other is Sallie Mae...Well the ACS loans were great & consolidated within 2 weeks...here we are almost Novemeber & Sallie Mae claims they never recieved any requests for the proper info from Direct Loans, when Direct Loans has now sent 2 requests!
