Leaving phone messages violations

Alliance One is leaving phone messages at my home. Now in the message, they are giving explicit details of the debt owing. They start off by saying that if this is not (my name) then delete this message and don't listen to it. By the way, my answering announcement is generic, doesn't give my name or any identifying information, just my phone number. Anyway, after saying that, the caller then goes on to say who they are, why they are calling, the amount, and what are our intentions. Doesn't this sound like an FDPCA violation?

What to do if Allied Interstate calls a friend for payment of debt

allied interstate called a friend of mine who lives in another state. They asked her for my home phone number. How in the world would they even know that this person was a friend? Do you know if they buy phone records from the various phone companies? The only thing I can think of is they bought my phone records and are calling everyone that I made phone calls to. These people are insane. I don't even know what supposed debt they are even calling about. Is it legal for a telephone company to sell your personal calling records?

Need help getting started on repaying old debts...

Hello! Great site... I just started getting my old debts together in order to start paying on them and getting my credit cleaned up. I need to know basically the how to's of this process. I've obtained my credit report and have disputed a few items and am waiting to hear back on that as well as a few things in my personal information that were wrong. I have about $6000 in total debt that needs to be repaid. Should I start small and work my way up? How should I go about contacting these debt collectors? By certified letters? Any help in getting started would be appreciated!

Credit Scores Are Not The End All

I have a very good friend that has been in the banking industry for over 20 years. She has since risen to the level of VP for a bank in my area. We had a recent conversation about credit scores, credit reports, and how many people get confused about dealing with the credit bureaus. The primary point she emphasized is that your credit score isn't the only thing banks and other lenders are looking at. Most banks are looking at debt to earnings ratios and past history. Are there any bankruptcies on your credit report? Are there accounts that have been charged off?

Negotiating tips and tactics

I had my wages garnished for an old debt. In my state the garnishment is only good for 90 days and then the collection agency has to file again for the remaining balance. If it's not paid off in 90 days, then they do it again. There is no court appearance after the first judgment as it has already been entered. Now the collection agency is willing to negotiate with me for the balance so that they don't garnish my wages. My issues is that they want it paid off in 3 months which the monthly amount would be the amount of the garnishment anyway maybe a few bucks less.

New Scam Alert

Hi All, I wanted to get this out there in case anyone else received this kind of letter. Today, I received a sweepstakes letter from Crown Investment Service out of Canada. It says I had won some international sweepstakes with a check enclosed for payment of the administrative fees. Of course, this set up red flags because the company is actually out of Kent, Ohio. I looked up the area codes listed on the letter and they were from Canada. We've all read about the advance fee scam loans originating from there.

Original creditor has closed...

I was looking over my credit report and there's an outstanding debt that I don't believe is mine. It's currently in collections, and when I called for a copy of a bill, they said they cannot provide one, as the original creditor has gone out of business. All they can provide is a letter stating that I owe this money. I can pay the $110.00 and it'll at least show satisfied, but is there a way for me to be able to keep my money and have this debt removed from my credit report? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
