Garnishment Question.
Date: Fri, 09/25/2009 - 08:09
I owe my divorce lawyer money and my check was garnished starting about a year ago, then I owed about $6,500, I get paid twice a month and the lawyer has been getting 20% ($355.00) of my check for a year.
In June the lawyer stated I owed about $3,000 so from that point I started keeping track of what I have paid and what was owed. As of today my records showed I still owed $755. Which mean at the end of October '09 I would have been paid off.
I got email from this law agency yesterday asking me to sign an order that would allow them to continue to get 20% of my check and showed that I owed $1900. When I questioned the law agency about how much I owed they stated that it was court costs to file the Garnishment and interest. When I did the math the interest and court cost would have been $1200 dollars since June.
All though I don't like losing $700 a month in garnishments, I am ok with it because I know I owed this money, but $1200 increase in 3 months seems completely unfair and wrong.
So I would like some advice on what I should do please?

You were probably being charged court costs, legal fees and interest from the beginning but were not aware of it. Ask them to send you a breakdown in the mail. They may be willing to negotiate a much smaller lump sum if you can afford it!

Having a line item document showing me that they are unfairly charging me for things is pointless, I will never get this paid off at this rate.
How can I fight all their "bogus" increases?

nope.stating what you owed at that time, and locking the amount in writing are two different things.unless you get it in writing that once that 1,200.00 additional is granished.you will owe nothing futher.no telling what they will do next.just the jaded cynic in me,but it is important to get that exact verbage in writing.
