Had an account with Dell that charged off in July. Showing on CR as charged off, still in Dell's name for a little over $1600. I made payments for 2 years so its mostly interest and fees, yada, yada, yada.

Got a letter from Valentine and Kebartes in July but it didn't specify an amount or for whom they were collecting. They called a couple of times and left a message that they had a great deal for me but I had no idea it was about Dell so I didn't return the call.

I called Dell and they refer me to VK. I've called Dell several times to make payment arrangements (I can either settle for 1k or pay 300 per mnth until all 1600 is paid)-they still refuse to speak with me.

From what I've read on here and other placed about VK I am, of course, hesitant to deal with them.

Anyone have luck getting Dell to deal directly? Would I be better off dealing with VK being that I can make reasonable payments?

Dell probably won't talk to you about it because they turned the debt over to VK, a lot of collection agencies will require that you sign a contract with them to refer your customer back to them after the debt is placed in their hands, this is so they are assured to get their piece of the pie. If you received a letter of collection from VK then you need to request debt validation within the 30 day window of receipt of the letter of collection. Send it to them certified. Never trust a verbal agreement with a collection agency, get it in writing before you send ANY money. And don't deny or admit to this debt without receiving proper validation from the CA.

Thanks. I understand then why Dell won't talk to me. Well, I didn't respond in 30 days b/c they never specified the debt. Should I call and ask for written notice or am I asking for trouble? I wouldn't send them any money without a written contract assuring the debt would be settled for the agreed upon amount. All the neg posts about VK are making me ancy.
