I had a collection agency called Pro Debt mediations call my parents home, I have been married for over thirty years and haven't used my maiden name since then. Someone named Eric Holt told my father they needed me to contact them by five o'clock today in order to get a statement from me. My father became very upset and the person who called him told him it was very, very important. I got home and my father had come over to tell me what the message was and I needed to call right away. So, I called this Eric Holt he ended up saying he was persuing a lawsuit from a payday loan company ,discount advaces. I was sooo upset he called my fathers home, (I don't even know how he got my parents number) He told me he had every right to do so and It was my fault I have taken out pdl's and not paid them back. I was being told he was going to persue the issue and determine what way to go but I am in legal trouble and he said my credit will be no good for years to come if I didn't settle this debt today. I had sent discount advances a form letter telling them to give me the amount of loan ,the payments made to date and what was put towards intrest. They ignored me and sent the complaint to this idiot. He yelled at me and was so cruel I hung up. He called back twice and was so nasty, I blocked the calls. Can they do this??? I feel so bad my parents were contacted and it upset them so much, what right do they have? The pdl was paid in full, it was the intrest and charges they added on that left my account so neg. I closed the checking account. I understand pdl are illegal in CT. What can they do??? I honestly do not owe them anything. Because my account was closed a months ago, I can't get my bank records for the old account. What do I do????

This is a SCAM! Any legit collection agency would NEVER call the parents of a customer and divulge such information. Discount Advances aka Credit Protection Depot are illegal and try these scare tactics all the time. The next time they call, tell them you are requesting written documentation on this alleged debt as required by federal law. Per the FDCPA, they have 5 days after their first initial contact to send you a dunning letter (letter of collection) via the mail, don't accept anything else, and don't converse with them any more until you receive one. Meanwhile, I would file complaints with the FTC, BBB, and your AG.

Thank you so much! Both of my parents are just out of the hospital from a very serious accident and my mom is still under round the clock care. I can't tell you how upset this has been to me not to mention a big embarrasment. I couldn't even say a word to this guy without him being very nasty and insisting on a credit card or checking account number. Thank you for your post, it makes me feel a little better.
