Collection Agency Adding Fee's or Interest?

15 years 1 month ago
Are collection agencies allowed to add fee's or interest? My boyfriend received a letter from a collection agency that stated: A) They are adding interest to the initial amount he owed for a medical bill. B) The want to charge him "service fee's" which include a $10 set up fee and 4% service charge, which they are adding to his first payment in a payment plan they proposed to him. He wrote them back in March of 2010 (received with proof CMRR) and received nothing back from them, but they continued to report on his CR (which he wasn't monitoring till I insisted till recently). They wa

Check N go Paid off in 2008 or 2009. Debt collectors calling to lock me up for check fraud.

15 years 1 month ago
I recieved a message on my phone that I had a debt and to contact them before the file charges against me for check fraud. I called them and they informed me after being extremly rude that me that I did not pay off a loan to Check N Go in Fall of 2008. Around that time I lost my job and moved to DC. The loan was in Virginia. I remember paying off the debt because I borrowed the money and paid. I had my son in 2007 and was in a tight spot. When I talked to them I explained I paid it and the guy only gave me 24 hours to send him proof. I should have never called them back...

Student loans and moving to canada

15 years 1 month ago
I am buried in student loans. I was not able to complete medical school due to family crisis and do not make enough to make loan payments. I owe approx $100k and the school loan sharks are trying to hang me (yes im garnished , taxes taken etc) but they still call me all day demanding more while racking up fees (the debt will never go away unless i win the lottery). I have three kids and am thinking of going to my wifes home country of canada. Can the debt follow me there? Does any one really know?

Turning the tables

First and foremost, let me THANK all of the people and moderators. Reading the information on this site was incredibly helpful. Ok, the back story. Similar to everyone else's. I had a small $200 loan. The loan company whose name I won't mention in public (email or message me or whatever) took more $1000 too much. I call them to ask what happened and get my money back. They gave me the run around. I got angry. Here's what I did. You can do it too. Don't take any crap from these people. Remember that the customer is always right.

Help with debt

I'm currently 19 years old. I was kicked out of my house when I was 17 so I've really had to fend for myself. Unfortunately, nobody has taught me how to manage my money and I'm currently in debt. The hours were just cut at my work and I'm having a lot of trouble paying my bills. What should I do/whom should I contact?
