Settled and Closed with a Balance?!?!

Can a collection agency show an account as "Settled in Full" and still report a balance? Debt Recovery Solutions agreed to the settle the account in full, and deem the account "settled and closed." Yes...I have the agreement in writing. I called a customer service representative today to request a zero balance letter. She informed me that my credit report would still reflect a balance owed. Huh?!?! She then proceeded to ask me if I would like to pay more money to have the account deleted from my report and whether I was trying to obtain a mortgage.

Student loan "pain in full" yet still garnished

Title says it all. They just took my tax return and sent me a letter afterwards that my student loans that were in default were pain in full on 1/29/10. Well it's Feb 18th and my last two week paycheck I got today is still being garnished. They listed my guaranty agency as: FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION OSFA 325 WEST GAINES ST. ROOM 1314 P.O. BOX 7019 TALLAHASSEE FL 323990400 800-366-3475 Do I call them to ask what the hell is going on?

Repossession Settlement

I was married in 2005 and bought a car with him in that year. We separated thereafter, and the car was repossesd. It has been 4 years since the repossession. No one has contacted me trying to collect, but it is on my credit. What can I do? What's the lowest they can settle the account for?

How the SOLs would change?

If I have switched from Georgia to California. Also, if there is a significant amount of debt acquired after marriage and since California is a community property state, can the collectors come after my spouse for the debt? P.S. the debt was generated in GA.

Over 80k in debt!

I make around $100k from my job and the small homebased business. I own a house, on which I still owe around $165k. It is a 30yrs fixed rate mortgage. However, my worry is that I have gotten myself into $80k worth of credit card debt. It wouldn't have been a problem if my wife would have been working. But, her contact with her current employer has just expired and she is yet to find herself a new employment. What is my best course of action at this given scenario?

How long would it take to repair my credit after bankruptcy?

Last year I was out of job and had to file bk for the whooping amount of debt of $70k. However, I have recently started looking for job and am expecting to be working soon. I'm worried that the creditor might run my credit report and find the bankruptcy listed and eventually deny me the employment. What is the best way to repair my credit? Can I get the bankruptcy removed? How long would it take to repair the credit anyway so that I don't get denied?

Can HELOC affect your credit score?

I was able to build some equity on my house but defaulted on my credit cards. Though the price of my house has gone down, I think I'll qualify for a home equity line of credit. My idea is to consolidate my other bills under the HELOC to pay them off. However, I'm not sure how it would affect my credit score. I'm considering consolidating my bills instead of settling to save my credit score from sinking. Can you guys help me understand the impact the HELOC would have my score?

Debt sold on..now two entries on credit file for same loan?

Hi all, Am not sure if i have posted on the right forums but will give it a go. I am asking a question for my partner who had a loan with GE money. He was made reduntant last year and missed two payments. As a result they sold the debt on to another company. The credit file for the loan with GE money however does not show as settled as is therefore affecting his credit rating. Is he in his rights to write to them to ask them to show it as settled as there is now a separate entry on his credit file for the same loan with the new company?

Is debt consolidation good or bad?

Debt consolidation loans might be helpful, but be aware that when you have debt problems to begin with, you might not qualify for low enough interest rates. So if you choose to go this route, be sure to do all the math: Figure out whether the consolidation loan actually will reduce your overall payments - including the total interest you'll be paying for the life of your loan.
