first thing--if the debt went delinquent in 2001, it shouldnt be on your credit report anymore in the first place. That is re-aging, and it is very illegal.
second, the FCRA is the federal law that governs credit reporting. in short, they are required to report as accurately as they can. if they are leaving out information, then you can challenge it through the credit bureaus because of missing or wrong information. Before you do that, though, I would send a certified letter to the debt collector who put this on your report ASAP.
