Hi..I am new here and have been reading through these threads, seeking information. I have poor credit and I've come up with a plan to fix my credit. I just need a car. I can easily obtain a part time job to pay things off on my credit but I do not have transportation due to an accident earlier this year that totaled my car. I've been doing a lot of research, exploring all the options available to me. Drivetime, JDByrider and Roadloans are all alternative places for people with poor credit (like me).

I have been getting a ton of phone calls from people saying they are with attorney's offices talking about payday loans I had defaulted on. they are asking me if I want to handle this volunteerily. what is it that they can do. I don't have a job right now for me to pay anything. now I'm scared to answer the phone cause I don't know what to say.

A rep from the company called my place of employement to begin with. I sent them a letter as was required under my rights stating them not to call here. Also the person gave my social security number out to whoever answered the phone. I returned the call and the person proceeded to threaten me that they were going to garnish my wages. I told her to do what they had to do and that at this time I was unable to settle my debt. She replied by saying Good luck!!

I recently was contacted by Asset Acceptance regarding a credit card debt with a popular music store 3 years ago. The original charges on the card I had attempted to pay after not receiving a bill from them. I made 4 attempts to pay the original creditor, 2 in the store and 2 by calling the 800 number on my credit card. Each time I was told they did not have a record of the account. I never once received a bill from them. Now 3 years later this Asset Acceptance is trying to collect twice the amount of the original bill.

I am signed up with a credit monitoring company and just got an alert this morning in reference to my experian credit report.

This might be a real stupid question but is there a difference between a collection attorney and an attorney-at-law? I have an out-of -state CA using an attorney-at-law in my state to contact me. Do they (the attorney) have to have any special licensing or bonds to represent an out-of state collection agency or just their state bar license. I live in MI.

I'm going to be meeting with a lawyer soon, but in the meantime I am trying to read up on the whole process, I have some questions that I can't find answers to.

Hi everyone Is it legal to use a voice recorder when you are talking to the creditor or collector? I got a very nice voice recorder in hand and am planning to use it when I do the negotiation over the phone. I do know that I have to tell them this call is being recorded but is this legal? Thank you for your advice.
