TOTW Archive: Financial Awareness (for students)

19 years 10 months ago
One of the biggest things you'll hear college students complain about is their student loans and their finances. It's become a general cliche that college students constantly write their parents only when they need money. Luckily, these days, more and more colleges are creating on-campus jobs for students and allowing them to hold part-time jobs while in college. I definitely think that money management should be a mandatory course in schools and colleges.

My twin sister has used my ss# to obtain a credit card, cell phone and electricity in her name with my ss. we are twin sisters so we share alot in common except love. This is the second time it has happened 10 years ago I cleared alot of stuff off my credit report, wasn't sure if it was her now I am sure. I live in California and she now lives in nevada. The dates they occurred were in the 1997 , 1996 1999, but just reported in 2002 and 2005 to my credit report. Where do I go to file a police report and how do I get her prosecuted, I am tired of her wrecking my credit,

Getting a car while dealing with little

19 years 10 months ago
A lot of people on this board have brought up the subject of how to get a new "used" car while dealing with debt. I know of a really reputable company that deals specifically with those with low credit scores or debt. They're called JD Byrider and if you fill out a form on their site, they contact you immediately. All you need to do is bring a recent paystub and proof of auto insurance to one of their auto lots and they will work with you to try and get you one of their cars. Their cars are backed by a warranty and are inspected.

They wont let me pay!

19 years 10 months ago
Greetings and Salutations In 1999 my husband took out a student loan for approximately 2500.00. It went into default and for a year and a half he paid 50 dollars a week in garnished wages. Well three years ago, the loan (I guessed got sold to a Student Loan Debt Collection agency) even after all he paid in garnished wages, and NOT TO MENTION THE 800 DOLLARS WE SPENT ON A GARNISHED TAX REFUND, they still had his balance at more than he originally borrowed!!!

Too Much Credit Card/Student Debt!!!

19 years 10 months ago
I am inquiring about consolidating my credit card (some default) debt, along with my existing Federal Student Loans. I am getting many calls from various Collection Agency's, and would really like to take care of this problem. I am VERY willing to pay off my existing debt in an attempt to right my credit history. I got into too much debt while in college, and am now paying for it. I have heard from others that Bankruptcy is a viable alternative, but I would rather take care of my existing debt, rather than "erasing" it by filing bankruptcy.

all debt is secured

19 years 10 months ago
My problem is that debt consolidation won't work for me. 90% of my debt is secured or not consolidateable. We have a mortgage payment, 3 car payments, school loan, a second mortgage, paying a relatives equity loan, car insurance, life insurance, utilities, etc. What we bring in never seems to be enough and I work a second job part time. Our income is good, but our outgo is a nightmare....and all the debt is long term! I try and try to budget, but there always seems to be some expense that we can't meet...car repairs, plumbing jobs, emergency room bills, college expenses, etc.
