I was enrolled in a graduate program at a public university in Texas last Fall. I paid for my tuition in cash and took out a subsidized and unsubsidized loan to cover living expenses. I dropped one of my classes and failed the other two. The university claims they tried to contact me regarding my enrollment situation (whether or not I actually performed poorly or if I just stopped attending classes), but I never received any correspondence. When I went online to download my 1098-t, I noticed I had a past due balance to the university.
